Our Services Although much of our work is with with non-profit broadcasters, we have worked with a wide variety of non-profit groups, and continue to do so. The descriptions below describe a community radio setting, but the skills and services are available to other non-profit groups. We have two decades of experience in all facets of community radio. We have managed stations, we have helped many groups who were starting new stations, and we have provided advice and training to many established community radio stations. Helping New Community Broadcasters If you are starting a new community radio station we can help you to figure out your first few steps, can work with groups in your community develop a plan that is inclusive and realistic. We can help you to develop your budget, your CRTC Application, and your station policies. We can facilitate a consultative process that will involve all of your stakeholders, helping you to ensure that you are addressing the needs of the many communities who will be using your airwaves. We are skilled at helping you to understand the language used by Engineers and CRTC staff, and are always happy to explain things in easy to understand language. We can also help your Board of Directors and stakeholders to understand the philosophy of community radio, and how it is different from commercial media. We can help you to figure out what equipment and studio facilities you need, and what can wait until later. We've seen station large and small, and understand how to help you to squeeze the most our of your budget. Helping Established Community Broadcasters Once you have your licence, we can offer training in all aspects of community radio operation, ranging from technical and journalist training appropriate to a community media outlet, to fundraising and long term planning. We especially take pride in our work to help stations build successful on-air funding drives. We also offer a series of Creative Radio workshops which help your programmers to explore artistic and experimental programming techniques. A look at our Client List will give you good idea of the wide range of workshops and services we provide. Our years of work with community radio broadcasters has led to the development of our "Station Building" Workshop packages. We understand the challenges and problems that community broadcasters face, and in particular the immense difficulties you may have when significant changes are being made to your organization. If your organization is undergoing a shift in management, Board or Staff restructuring, or is trying to build a better relationship with your Student Union, community, or your volunteer population, you can benefit from our "Station Building" Workshop. In particular if your station is in a crisis situation, we can offer trusted and confidential advice that can help you to restore a functioning structure. During the "Station Building" Workshop we will spend a one or two day period with your primary stakeholders - staff, Board, key volunteers - during which we will facilitate group work that will help to build trust and respect between groups, develop a shared vision and Mission Statement, and set achievable and measurable priorities. A priority for work during these intensive day long sessions is Staff and Board relations, with an emphasis on managing staff workloads and defining the roles of both groups. Each "Station Building" Workshop is custom designed in close consultation with your Board and Staff. You can expect that the one or two days that we work with you on-site will involve hard work, but will have measurable results. If your station can use this sort of hands on help, contact us directly and we'll work with you to see what we can offer. All calls are confidential. Special Projects We have coordinated conferences, and have provided Temporary FM Radio stations to special events. We've consulted with stations in crisis, and have reviewed equipment bids from suppliers. We have coordinated student elections for funding, and have developed research and funding proposals. We'll happily talk to you about special or unusual projects and see how we can help you to make them happen. Web Design and Site Management We offer a package of web services that are aimed at clients who need a simple, clear web presence with a minimum of headaches. Among the sites designed and/or managed by us are darrencopeland.net, New Adventures in Sound Art, Saving Grace, and our own web spacescommunity-media.com and MagneticSpirits.com. Our web design focuses on content, not flash, and on presenting your information in a pleasing and easy to navigate form. We also design web spaces that are easy to maintain, or can arrange hosting and updates on your behalf. Writing and Editing We are available for freelance writing projects. Our work has been published in MusicWorks, RadioWorld, Airspace, Wavelength, Broadcast Dialogue and elsewhere. How We Work Every community is different, and every community radio station is different. We understand that what works for a big city station may not be right for a small town. We understand that the rules that keep a student radio station on track are different from what older programmers may need. We'll take the time to talk to you, and to learn the specifics of your radio station and your community. We'll develop workshops and training that fit your needs, and that allow your staff and programmers to get the most benefit. We'll give you information that you can use. We also understand that a lot of the time you might not know exactly what you need, or how to figure out the right questions. We're used to that! Starting and running a radio station is a complicated job, so we always have time to talk, and to help you out. Please feel free to call or email with your questions. . |
