Application No. 2006-1594-0
Application by Radio Charlesbourg/Haute St-Charles to renew the licence of the Type B community radio programming undertaking CIMI-FM Charlesbourg expiring 31 August 2007.
It appears to the Commission that the licensee may have failed to comply with Sections 8(5), 8(6) and 9(3) of the Radio Regulations, 1986 concerning the provision of logger tapes and the playlists during the broadcast week of January 7 to 13, 2007.
While at Ryerson University this weekend for the Radio Without Boundaries conference I noticed flyers for OpenCKLN.com, apparently protesting some action by the CKLN staff or Board.
If you’re managing a volunteer run radio station it’s well worth a look at the Statement of Claim - yes, they are suing CKLN.
I’m not in a position to judge the legal or factual basis for the claims made. I know that volunteers sometimes see staff actions as very threatening, and do not understand the larger picture.
Take the time to read the web site, and think about how your volunteer agreements are structured, and how your staff and Board handle compliants. Also note that one of the primary complaints revolves around funding drive giveaways, and differing perceptions of how such things work at CKLN.
Think about what your station would do in a similar circumstance, whether you could afford the lawyers needed to fight a case, and what something like this can do to station morale.
