E-Learning Resources

Note: This page of resources was created to help a client to understand what resources were available for a small e-learning project. Think of it as our notepad for keeping track of links and ideas.

http://www.elearnspace.org/
Lovely step by step resource that contains a wealth of information in a well organized fashion. This is probably a good place to begin searching for answers and concepts.

http://www.managersforum.com/Links/ResultKeyword.asp?Keyword=eLearning A really interesting collection of links plus a bit of a glossary and discussion of what e-learning is, and is not.

http://home.learningtimes.net/insync
InSync Center is online community of practice focused on fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing between online training professionals. Forums and lots of interesting looking resources.

http://www.onlinelearning.net
Company providing on-line course in a fairly conventional manner. Nothing really innovative but worth skimming the demo.

http://www.e-learningguru.com
Another pretty commercial site but it does have some good "e-Learning Basics for Newbies" in the Library". Also has articles on writing e-learning RFPs and budgets.

http://www.knowledge-generation.com/
Knowledge Generation is a UK-based consultancy and coaching business specializing in supporting organizations and individuals in making better use of their knowledge. The discussion of Communities of Practice is well worth reading.

http://www.learnhousing.co.uk/
Housing org which is starting e-learning. Site designed by the folks above.

http://www.researchstudio.at
Austrian firm who provided a quote to AIR. They offer a service which delivers Q&A flashcards to user screensavers. A demo of their process is here: http://www.schonendlernen.at/index.html?l=2

Pelion
Pelion, a virtual micro-organisation, co-directed by Jo Murray and Frankie Forsyth develops people's skills in using intuitive tools for e-facilitation, e-learning design and open knowledge sharing. Friendly with lots of great information.

Australian Flexible Learning Framework
Another great Australian site with great resources.

http://www.jjg.net/elements/pdf/elements.pdf
Lovely flowchart: The Elements of User Experience. A simple representation of the steps needed to plan a learning project. The author Jesse James Garrett is someone who has given a lot of thought to how one creates a positive user experience on the web.

http://www.iconprocess.com/iconProcess/ueWorkflow.php
IconProcess User Experience - another lovely flowchart that describes the whole process in remarkable detail. Looks great too.

Software

http://www.edutools.info/course/
Reviews Course Management Systems. Has information on several dozen systems, although most are geared to public or post secondary schools.

http://www.unesco.org/iiep/virtualuniversity/forums2.php?queryforums_id=9&querychapter=1 UNESCO's site looking at Open Source Software for E-learning.

http://www.SimpleLearningCreator.com
Rather simple html system.
Flashcards with Flash.

Blackboard
One of the big names in academic courseware. Probably way more than we need and way more that we can afford. If though we were starting a University it would be a good choice.

WebCT
Another of the big names, and again, probably far more than AIR needs.

Open Source or Free Software Packages

Moodle
An Open Source software package which has been recommended by a few people. Documentation seems good. Paid support is available. One good example of the system is an on-line candle making course that you can examine by registering here.

.LRN
.LRN is an open source enterprise elearning platform originally developed at MIT. It is fairly full featured. Outside companies may provide support. At a glance the documentation looks adequate if a little techy.

ATutor
Seems fairly full featured, and seems to have an active user community. Looks professional and seems to have decent documentation. Offers paid support. demo

Claroline
Claroline is an Open Source software based on PHP/MySQL. It's a collaborative learning environment allowing teachers or education institutions to create and administer courses through the web. Documentation is by users primarily. No paid support. demo

Theory and Discussion

http://www.downes.ca/news/OLDaily.htm
A blog from Stephen Downes which discusses many topics related to on-line learning.

http://ifets.ieee.org/
International Forum of Educational Technology & Society. High level stuff, lots of links, but seems to be largely abandoned.

Online Consultation Technologies Centre of Expertise
from
E-Government Knowledge Centre, Government of Canada

http://www.brandon-hall.com/disgroup.html
