Double Double Radio

Keeping the Canadian Spirit alive in Appalachia

IMPORTANT NOTICE! In June of 2002 Tim and Mabel left Appalachia and returned to Canada. Accordingly, the "Double Double Radio Show" had to come to an end.

This website is now largely un-maintained, but we thank you for your interest, and for your overhwhelming support. As our way of saying thanks, we would like to invite you to download this PDF version of the Official Coat of Arms for The Canadian Embassy for Appalachia.

Yours, Tim Horton.

Double Double Radio is a program that plays music by Canadian Artists on WMMT Radio in Whitesburg, Kentucky. We believe that it may be the only such program in all of Kentucky, and possibly the entire southern United States.

The program is hosted by Barry Rueger, AKA "Tim Horton", with occasional help from Mabel Sugar, the Accidental Snowbird. Watch this space for future developments.

Double Double Radio airs every Wednesday from 11 AM to 1 PM on 88.7 WMMT, and on the Internet in RealAudio.

Double Double Radio always needs more great Canadian Music. If you're a Canadian performer, especially in the categories of folk, jazz, or (yeah, it sounds ridiculous) Americana, just send us your stuff. We also welcome straight ahead rock and roll, punk, and anything exotic or world musicish. We're brave - feel free to send us what you have.

CDs can be sent to:

Make sure to include ordering info for Americans - it's really unlikely that they'll find your disc in any record store down here.

Artists Listing

Stompin Tom

Our Patron, Dr. Tom Conners

Fine Print: As you may notice, the Double Double show actually does play songs that don't meet the official MAPL or CanCon definitions. But hey, I'm in the U.S.! I define "Canadian" as songs by or about Canadians, songs that somehow have a connection with Canada, or Artists that have some kinship with us. I also include songs and artists that for whatever reason are well known in Canada, but not down here, even though they are actually American. I also include songs and artists that are just so good that they transcend any sort of nationalistic labels.

Still, I am confident that I maintain at least 95% Canadian Content, as defined by the CRTC.

Visiting in Kentucky: People ask me "Where can we play down in Whitesburg?" The immediate answer is: not many places. Whitesburg is a town of 1300. Despite the presence of the Appalshop it is not very cosmopolitan. Bluegrass will fill a theatre, or mainstream country, but that's about it. The only venue of note is the theatre at Appalshop (the home of WMMT). It seats 150, and is actually a really nice place to play or listen. As a rule the band gets most of the door and Appalshop recaptures enough to pay the sound person. Audiences can be very small, or can fill the place.

Our advice is: if you're passing through southeast Kentucky, or southwest Virginia, and you have a day off in the middle, please think about stopping by. We can generally offer a good homecooked meal, and a place to stay, and you can do a show in a town that you've never seen.
