| Amidst the cacophony of everyday life, it is important to explore sound in new ways. Join us for two days of soundmaking, listening and composition using sounds from our own community! Bells and Whistles is a two day audio/radio art workshop designed to encourage artists in all disciplines to use sound in creative non-traditional ways. Whether you're a visual artist using sound sculpture in a gallery, a sound poet who uses "found sound", or a radio producer wanting to explore new ways of composing radio programs, this workshop will open your ears to new possibilities. |

The weekend's activities:
Concert/Seminar - Hear innovative sound works being done by artists across the country.
Listening Sessions - To be a good sound artist, one must be a good listener. Soundwalking (recorded walking tours of Ottawa's neighbourhoods) sessions will be held, as well as "ear cleaning" sessions which will teach you how to hear the sounds that you normally ignore.
Technology Workshops - Topics will include microphones, production techniques, computer based sound editing, and choosing appropriate technology.
Composition - Sounds of Ottawa will be gathered prior to the workshop which will be used to compose a sound work depicting our Nation's capital at the eve of the new Millennium. Workshop participants will do much of the preliminary work on this project.
The final composition will be broadcast on Canada Day 2000 by CKCU 93.1 FM and on the Internet.
Guest Artist - Hildegard Westerkamp
Hildegard Westerkamp is an internationally renowned audio artist and electroacoustic composer based in Vancouver. The majority of her compositions deal with the acoustic environment: with urban, rural or wilderness soundscapes, with the voices of children, men and women, with noise or silence, music and media sounds, or with the sounds of different cultures. Hildegard has travelled to many cities and countries to perform and teach, including Brazil, Germany, and India. She has composed film soundtracks, sound documents for radio, and has produced and hosted radio programs such as Soundwalking and Musica Nova on Vancouver Co-operative Radio.
