Inside
This year's National Campus and Community Radio Conference (the sixteenth!) is expected to be the biggest and best ever. Over 300 broadcasters from campus, community, and native radio stations are expected to travel from Europe, the U.S., and every corner of Canada. They will gather in Hamilton, Ontario for six days starting on June 17th.
Beginning with the annual Women in Radio conference on Monday, and continuing until the final NCRA Plenary Sessions on Saturday, volunteers and staff alike will hone their skills, learn to be better broadcasters, and chart the future of non-commercial broadcasting in Canada.
Days spent in workshop sessions will be followed by nights of showcase concerts featuring dozens of bands from Hamilton and beyond, Spoken Word performances, and (on Friday) a keynote speech by Federal M.P. Svend Robinson.
Among the highlights of the week will be the annual Standard Radio Awards for excellence in community broadcasting; a day devoted to workshops by First Nations Broadcasters; and a one day trade show for Small Record Labels and artists with independent music releases.
A full FM radio station will be established on site for the week, and everyone is encouraged to bring their ideas.
The price for the week is only $115 (until May 31), or $99 for a three day pass. Accommodations at McMaster University are also reasonably priced.

One of Canada's best known sound artists, Claude will conduct workshops at NCRC '96, and will lead a number of Soundwalking expeditions. Learn to use your ears to their fullest, and understand what you hear - and what you don't hear. The sonic atmosphere which surrounds us is one element of our environment which is often ignored, yet is is as important as the air that we breath, or the water that we drink.

You're encouraged to bring your best ideas, and produce some truly innovative live radio.
And - send us tapes of your best shows (in advance). 93.3 CFMU will be broadcasting the best of campus radio throughout the week. Contact Janis @ 905-525-9140 x 27208
Before you leave, call your Health Insurer. The cutbacks in health care spending in recent years may mean that your provincial Medicare won't cover all of your expenses outside of your home province. Supplementary insurance is usually not too expensive, and could help you to avoid a doctor's bill even bigger than your student loan.
Ontario has a very active Native broadcasting community. We're drawing on some of the
most talented people in that community to lead workshops today. The perspective is
different, and we're sure that you'll carry away some new ideas about radio.
We'll have a couple of raffles during NCRC'96. We're reviving the Great T-Shirt Raffle. We want every station in the land to bring along a t-shirt or hat with their logo. We'll collect them up, sell tickets, and one lucky person will win the whole shootin' match. Last time we did this it added up to 47 shirts, 5 hats, and a jacket!
We've also been faced with the question of what to do with the dozens of CDs, tapes, 7 inches, and wax cylinders that have been sent to us. We're going to raffle them off too!
Just five bucks for a ticket (or three for ten bucks!), and your Christmas shopping is done for at least three Years!

Each year at NCRC , one day is set aside for the women who make radio. Women young and
old gather together to share of their experiences, their triumphs, and their strength.
This year's theme is Telling Women's Stories. Women from across Canada and abroad
are invited to send us their stories.
Bring along a story about yourself, someone you know, or something you think is important.
It doesn't matter what the story is about, as long as it is your story, and it comes from
the heart. You can sign your name, or remain anonymous.
Each session throughout the day will begin with the reading of one woman's story, without
identification, chosen at random. There will be no discussion, and no judgments. Only a
moment of reflection, and a keener understanding that one woman's story is every woman's
story.
As we share our stories, we share our power. A shared history will help to empower all of
us.
If enough women make requests, McMaster Housing will make one floor of Hedden Hall a women only residence. When you send in your room registration, make sure to specify that you want a room on the Women's Floor. If there is enough demand, you can enjoy a testosterone free zone!
Six Nights. Two venues right at the conference sites. Major label showcases. Indy label
showcases. Music of all types, poetry, First Nations performers, and good ol' Hamilton
rock and roll.
Nearly ninety-nine bands and other performers, from pop to punk.
All of this is included in your NCRC '96 Registration.
Most of the week is spent at McMaster University, with brand new residence rooms, beautiful parkland, and two great bars for evening concerts.
For two days we'll move up to Mohawk College on the "mountain". The Media Studies department at Mohawk is generously loaning us their studio facilities for workshops and training sessions.
By Plane - since Greyhound got into the action, there are some great plane fares to Ontario. Most likely you'll fly into Pearson International near Toronto. We can pick you up, or you can take the airport shuttle to McMaster.
By Car - Calgary to Hamilton is three very long days - say 18 hours. Add a day and a half from Vancouver. From Winnipeg - two not bad days. From Fredericton NB - again, an 18 hour day (especially if you stop in Quebec City).
By Bus or Train - The train from Montreal is a beautiful trip - make sure to ask for a student fare. By bus - cheap but not at all romantic.
Once you're near Hamilton, here are local directions.
Hamilton is one of the friendliest cities in North America, and we would love to see you. CHMR Mohawk College, CFMU McMaster University, and The Friends of Hamilton Wentworth Community Radio will be your hosts.
